Digital Do It Yourself (DiDIY) project partners organize three Italy-based events at Castellanza (VA), Milan and Rome
From May 30 to June 5, 2016, the Digital Do It Yourself (DiDIY) project partners LIUC – Università Cattaneo, Politecnico of Milan – Design Department, Ab.Acus and Free Knowledge Institute organize three local events in Italy within the European Maker Week, an initiative promoted by European Commission whose goals are draw European citizens to the “Maker world” and the FabLab, Makerspaces, Hackersapce and the Hardware Startups Environment, create awareness about the importance of the maker culture, to foster an education of creativity and innovation in all schools across Europe, build bridges between local authorities and media and the main players of their own local makers ecosystems.
All the events will be held in Italian. Free admission (details and registration on the EMW site).

Creativity from technology: a challenge for education
DiDIY partner LIUC will present two projects aimed at exploring, experimenting, and disseminating information on the use of digital tools for promoting creativity of students and improving their learning processes.
The intended participants are then mainly high school teachers and students. One of the projects is DiDIY, the other is called LAB.INT.

Open Meeting: Legal and regulatory barriers to large-scale digital DIY
Can the "Makers Revolution" exit makerspaces, to really reach and benefit the WHOLE society? What are the main obstacles towards that goal, as far as laws and regulations are concerned?
The current legal and regulatory (insurance, product liability, quality control, etc) European landscape is NOT really friendly for makers, or compatible with their mindset, because it is conceived for, and enforces, a complete and rigid separation between (large) manufacturing companies on one side, and mere consumers on the others.
We will give some presentations of the main regulatory/legal challenges awaiting makers in the next years, followed by panels in which all attendants can work with experts (makers, IP lawyers, insurance/product liability experts, representatives of trade unions and consumer associations ...) to learn more about these issues, and build together a "map" that shows what they are, and how they are connected.

Creativity workshop - Exploring digital technologies with teachers
DiDIY Partner POLIMI, with the assistance of Ab.Acus, offers co-design workshop for teachers, to explore the potential of digital technologies (e.g. additive manufacturing, coding and Open source) to empower students’ creativity. The workshop will investigate and build scenarios of using technology in school through design thinking methods and tools.

About DiDIY Project
Digital Do It Yourself (DiDIY) is a new socio-technological phenomenon, centered around digital devices that support, often through open online communities, the convergence of "atoms" and "bits".
DiDIY-related technologies and social practices enable the low cost prototyping and manufacturing of physical artefacts from digital specifications. They can lead to new scenarios in the roles and relations among individuals, organizations, and society, in which new opportunities and threats emerge accordingly.
The DiDIY Research Project (www.didiy.eu), which addresses the Horizon 2020 call for a "Human-centric Digital Age", is studying how DiDIY and the increasing social adoption of ABC (atoms-bits convergence) devices are:
• reshaping organization, work, education, research and creative design
• impacting on creative society,
• influencing legal systems,
• changing ethics.

• LIUC - Università Cattaneo (IT, www..liuc.it), university established in 1991 by the Industrial Association of the Province of Varese
• Communication and Media Research Institute (UK, www.westminster.ac.uk/camri) of the University of Westminster, a world-leading centre for media and communications research
• Ab.Acus srl (IT, www.ab-acus.eu), a company whose mission is to design and develop technologically advanced products and services
• Manchester Metropolitan University (UK, www2.mmu.ac.uk), the largest campus-based undergraduate university in the UK, with an emphasis on vocational education and employability
• Free Knowledge Institute (NL, http://freeknowledge.eu) a hub that, since 2007, has coordinated several international projects in the areas of Free Software, Open Standards, Open Educational Resources, Access to Knowledge
• Amerikaniko Kollegio Anatolia (GR, www.act.edu), a non-profit educational institution with a comprehensive undergraduate curriculum in Business, Business Computing, International Relations and English
• Politecnico di Milano (IT, www.polimi.it), a scientific-technological university funded in 1863, which trains engineers, architects and industrial designers
The goal of the Project is to produce well-grounded models and guidelines to support both education and policy making on DiDIY, intended as an ongoing phenomenon that, while surely enabled by technology, should be driven and shaped by social and cultural strategies, not technology.
The DiDIY Project, which started at the beginning of 2015 and has a duration of 30 months, is now collecting as much DiDIY-related information as possible, and collaborating with other people, projects and communities interested in Digital DIY, from educators to makers and public administrators.
